Quick answer: how many boat fenders do I need?

Under the current ELITE standard recommendation, quantity increases as hull length increases. Maximum-protection packages can add size, diameter or additional fenders where the approved rule calls for it.

15 to under 50 ft

4 fenders in the standard package, with fender size increasing as LOA increases.

50 to under 70 ft

6 fenders in the standard package. The maximum-protection option increases to 8 fenders from 60 ft.

70 ft and larger

10 × 72" × 24" fenders is the current starting recommendation. For maximum protection, contact ELITE for a custom review.

Why this chart differs from a generic rule of thumb

Many boat-fender guides estimate a minimum diameter from boat length alone. ELITE uses product-specific 5-foot LOA bands, exact quantities and a separate maximum-protection option. These are the same current base rules used by Fender Finder, so the chart connects directly to real ELITE products rather than a generic fender size.

Boat fender size chart by boat length

Minimum lengths are inclusive and maximum lengths are exclusive. For example, a 45 ft boat uses the 45 to under 50 ft row. These are the current approved base rules used by ELITE's Fender Finder.

When conditions get tougher, size up

This guide is a starting point. Dock geometry, wind, wakes, current, rafting and deteriorating weather can increase the loads on your fenders. When conditions are more demanding, choose the approved maximum-protection option or ask ELITE for help. Increasing fender diameter can create more separation between the hull and the dock.

How to choose the right boat fender size

Use verified hull LOA

Use the published hull length overall. If a manufacturer identifies a pulpit, bowsprit or add-on swim platform separately, do not automatically add that optional projection to the sizing length.

Start with the standard recommendation

Match your LOA to exactly one row in the chart. The current base rules are shared by monohulls and multihulls.

Move to maximum protection when the berth demands more

The maximum-protection column increases diameter, length or quantity where the approved rule calls for additional hull separation and coverage.

Why fender diameter, length and quantity matter

Diameter creates separation

Larger-diameter fenders hold the hull farther away from the dock and are used in several maximum-protection steps.

Length helps with movement

Longer fenders become more important as vessel size, freeboard and hull movement increase.

Quantity increases coverage

Larger boats need protection spread over more of the hull, which is why the standard package moves from four to six and eventually ten fenders.

A space-saving option for smaller boats

How many fenders should a boat have?
Under the current ELITE standard package, boats from 15 ft to under 50 ft use four fenders, boats from 50 ft to under 70 ft use six, and boats 70 ft and larger start with ten 72" × 24" fenders. Maximum-protection options can increase quantity in some length bands.
Should I choose the standard or maximum-protection option?
The standard recommendation is the normal starting point. Choose maximum protection when your berth, weather, wakes, current or rafting situation calls for more hull separation or more coverage.
What boat length should I use for fender sizing?
Use verified hull length overall (LOA). If optional projections such as a pulpit, bowsprit or add-on swim platform are listed separately by the manufacturer, do not automatically include them in the sizing length.
Do catamarans use a different base fender size?
The current ELITE base Fender Rules use the same LOA bands for monohulls and multihulls. Fender Finder can still use manufacturer, model and year to confirm the correct boat and LOA before applying the rule.
What if my boat is exactly on a size boundary?
The lower number is included and the upper number is excluded. A 45 ft boat therefore uses the 45 to under 50 ft row, while a 50 ft boat uses the 50 to under 55 ft row.
What should I use on a boat over 70 ft?
The current starting recommendation is ten 72" × 24" Zilla fenders. For a maximum-protection package on boats 70 ft and larger, contact ELITE for a custom recommendation.
